 Scientists from Liverpool Hope University and Liverpool John Moore’s University tested the effects of flavanols on a group of healthy adults aged between 40 and 60 and found it had a considerable positive impact on their workout performance. 

Without regular physical activity, ageing slows the rate at which our muscles consume oxygen which we need when we exercise. This is due to impairments in blood flow supply to the active muscles. As a result, our ability to tolerate exercise is weakened. Flavonoids, once known as vitamin P, increase the rate of oxygen consumption at the onset of activity, improving our ability to keep going, which allows us to improve stamina.

Flavanols are rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Adding Cacao to your workout smoothie alongside a diet of other flavonoid-rich sources like berries, green tea and kale is also believed to help prevent cognitive decline and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

 So when is the best time to sip your Cacao? Before, after or during your workout?
